Underpainting 2

Another figure for which I used underpainting was an ettin from Reaper miniatures (Fig.6). A similar process was used here but more polished than with the minotaur. The photos also show the gray scales necessary for this process better than the minotaur.

The overall look of the underpainting technique is distinct compared to using opaque paints. You get the color brightness of painting over white and the contrast from having dark shadows. Another thing that I like about it is the irregularity that occurs when using washes. Nature is not always a smooth gradient of color, and for me a little "sloppiness" can add some needed character to a figure. Of course, this is a personal preference and sometimes I do like to get a clean look as well with my washes. I used underpainting on Malus Darkblade's mount Spite and washes of blues and greens to get a vivid color that was not too sloppy (Fig.7). Multiple layer

Summary

Now that miniature painting is increasing in popularity and is so widely viewed on the web it is important that we as artists try to constantly improve our skills and try new techniques. Underpainting is just one of many methods that can be used to achieve a distinct look to miniature artwork.
